Shelter: A Year of Action and Learning on Housing

ree

What does it truly mean to have a place to call home? This year at Southminster, we're taking a deeper look into the housing crisis and the issue of homelessness, focusing on how our faith calls us to respond. The problems can feel immense, but by focusing on one issue, we can make a real difference—gaining a deeper understanding, strengthening our local partnerships, and becoming more effective in our giving and service.

Together, we will:

  • Ground our work in Scripture, examining what the Bible says about caring for our vulnerable neighbors.

  • Learn the facts about the root causes of homelessness and the housing crisis.

  • Listen to our local mission partners, understanding the challenges they face and the systems they've built to respond.

  • Get out of the building to visit key partners like Firehouse and the Presbyterian Home for Children.

  • Put our faith into action through hands-on service with organizations like Habitat for Humanity, WellHouse and First Light.

Here’s what’s coming up:

  • September 14, 21 and 28 – Join us for a three-week adult Sunday School series, Shelter: Where do we start? as we study our Biblical call to care for our vulnerable neighbors, learn more about the local reality, and explore root causes of the housing crisis.

  • September 24 – We welcome the Presbyterian Home for Children as our speakers at Wednesday Night Connect. We’ll hear an update from this long-time partner on their housing programs that serve low-income women and children and severely disabled adults.

  • September 28 – Serve hands-on as we prepare and serve dinner for the residents of First Light Shelter.
