MINISTRY UNITS

Generally meet on the Wednesday before the Stated Session Meeting.  All ministry units meet at 5:30 p.m., except for Congregational Care, which meets on the first Monday at 10:30 a.m.  Ministry Units do not meet during the Lenten month or the month of July (summer break).

ADMINISTRATIVE MINISTRY UNIT                                                                                                

Purpose:

     This Ministry Unit (MU) acts for the Session in all matters relating to administration, finance and personnel for Southminster Presbyterian church.

     Membership of this Unit shall include at least two active Ruling Elders, the Church Treasurer, the Assistant Church Treasurer, and a minimum of four members of the congregation at large. This MU will meet at least once per month.

Some responsibilities of this Ministry Unit include:

  • Review and approve all contracts subject to Session action
  • Maintain internal control procedures over financial records
  • Prepare the annual budget
  • Maintain sound financial records and reports as required by the Session
  • Arrange for and assure that an annual financial review is executed

CONGREGATIONAL CARE MINISTRY UNIT                                                                                   First Monday at 10:30 a.m.

Purpose:

     This Ministry Unit (MU) will plan and implement programs designed to minister to congregational needs and to involve every willing member of the Church family in an active role in the mission of the church.

     Membership of this Unit shall include at least two active Ruling Elders and at least seven other members of the congregation at large, including a Presbyterian Women representative, and the Care Circle Moderator. This MU will meet at least once per month.

Responsibilities:

  • Assimilate new members into the life of the congregation
  • Conduct a continuing program which challenges every member of the congregation to use their skills and talents in becoming involved in the life of the church
  • Provide personal care and concern for all members of the congregation

FAITH FORMATION MINISTRY UNIT                                                                                           

Purpose:

     This Ministry Unit (MU) is to carry out the Faith Formation Ministry at Southminster Presbyterian Church.

     The membership of this MU shall include at least two active Ruling Elders and a minimum of seven members of the congregation at large, Vacation Church School Director, and representatives from Church School classes. Advisory members of this MU are the Pastor and the Associate Pastor for Education and Youth Ministries. This MU will meet at least once per month.

  • The Nursery Program
  • Youth Fellowship
  • The Church Library
  • Camps and Conferences
  • Confirmation Class
  • Children’s Worship
  • Evangelism
  • Other Program as needed

FELLOWSHIP MINISTRY UNIT                                                                                                    

Purpose:

     This Ministry Unit (MU) is responsible for promoting fellowship through programs and activities designed to involve all members of the congregation. It will publicize and encourage participation in its activities in order to strengthen the community of the church families.

     Membership of this MU shall include at least two active Ruling Elders and other members of the congregation at large. This MU will meet at least once per month.

Responsibility:

Promote a sense of community and fellowship

  • Plan, Coordinate and promote Wednesday Fellowship suppers and adult programs
  • Plan annual church picnic
  • Plan annual Adult Christmas party
  • Supervise the operation of the Church kitchen and kitchen personnel

GENEROSITY MINISTRY UNIT                                                                                                 

Purpose:

     This Ministry Unit (MU) will oversee and lead the congregation in the growing use of time, talents, and resources for the ongoing work of the church.

     Membership of this MU shall include at least two active Ruling Elders and at least three members of the congregation at large. This MU will meet at least once per month.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop a comprehensive, year-round program of stewardship education for adults, youth and children, teaching the commitment of life and possessions
  • Challenge the people of God with the privilege of responsible Christian stewardship of money, time and talents
  • Cooperate with the Administrative MU to project and prepare the annual budget
  • See that each new member is given the opportunity to understand the financial objectives of Southminster and is given the opportunity to pledge
  • Identify members who have not given to the church in the past twelve months and work with the Congregational Care MU so that the Unit may try to reactivate the members
  • Identify, plan, promote, implement and evaluate a variety of types of stewardship emphases on a three to four year cycle
  • Oversee the Gifts and Memorials Committee

OUTREACH MINISTRY UNIT                                                                                                   

Purpose:

     This Ministry Unit (MU) will provide opportunities for witness in the community and the world. This MU will develop and implement imaginative techniques for personal evangelism and outreach armed especially at those who have not responded to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, as well as an outreach to newcomers and other visitors to the church.

     Membership of this MU shall include at least two active Ruling Elders and at least seven members of the congregation at large. This MU will meet at least once per month.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide opportunities for witness and general outreach
  • Mobilize other resources for membership growth
  • Provide oversight, direct action, and support for the “Commitment to Evangelism”

PROPERTY MINISTRY UNIT                                                                                                      

Purpose:

     This Ministry Unit (MU) will preserve the beauty and dignity of the buildings and grounds of Southminster Presbyterian Church. In addition to this general maintenance function, this MU will be responsible for all tools and equipment owned by the Church. Any repairs or other work required on the buildings, grounds, or equipment will be scheduled by the MU.

     Membership of this MU shall include at least two active Ruling Elders, the Church Administrator, and a minimum of six members from the congregation at large.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide for the management of the property inside the church building
  • Work with the Church Administrator in seeing facilities are maintained
  • Arrange for the management of property outside the church building
  • Advise, recommend or reject any requests for changes (temporary or permanent) to the church buildings and/or grounds
  • Plan and coordinate volunteer help on activities such as “All Church Work Days”
  • Be responsible for the church Bus
  • Be responsive to congregational or staff suggestions or criticisms regarding church property and/or its condition

WORSHIP MINISTRY UNIT                                                                                                       

Purpose:

     This Ministry Unit (MU) shall provide for the worship of the people of God, including the preaching of the Word, the sharing of the Sacraments, and for the music program, in keeping with the principles in the Directory for Worship. It will be sensitive to worship needs of all persons wherever they are in their faith journey.

     Membership of this MU shall include at least two active Ruling Elders and at least five members of the congregation at large. This MU will meet at least once per month.

Responsibilities:

  • Establish the time, place, and appropriate Order of Worship for regular Sunday worship services, as well as special services of worship
  • Supervise the celebration of the sacraments
  • Provide the proper setting for the conduct of public worship
  • Oversee the music program of the church
  • Record (on CD)each worship service and make them available to members
  • Provide for the continuing education of our congregation regarding the rich worship life of the Presbyterian and Reformed tradition
  • Provide for Enrichment or help with Children’s Worship for young children who are not in Nursery care during the worship hour
